Rick's Memories of Uncle Tom

Uncle Tom was a humble man who knew great and powerful people.  As a child I can remember when Rudy had a train depot that set next to the tracks across the street from the store and post office.  Uncle Tom would ride the train from Fayetteville and we would sometimes pick him up or drop him off and he would stay with my grandparents.  When the passenger train service stopped he would ride the bus and get off and on at Dean Springs.  I had many missed opportunities to speak with a man who lived history and I would encourage children today to obtain a video camera and record interviews with their elderly relations because so much history is altered and the truth lost in time via public education.  Why learn it out of a book when you can learn it from those who lived it.  I didn't know Uncle Tom well but from time to time I will attend a burial at the Fayetteville National Cemetery and I will wonder over by Uncle Tom's grave to say hello.
